Eurasia Critic, June 2008

By George HEWITT (Professor; London School Of Oriental and African Studies)

Historical BackgroundBagrat' III (d. 7th May 1014) was the first ruler of the united feudal kingdom of Georgia, having inherited the 200 year-old 'Kingdom of Abkhazia' (which encompassed not only today's Abkhazia but western Georgia too) from his mother. In the Georgian chronicles he (and his successors) carried the title /mepe apxazta da kartvelta/

During last few years the permanent status of Kosovo has been one of the main problems in global affairs. After February 17, when Kosovo declared its independence and was recognized by some nations, the world divided into two opposing camps. Some believe that the division of Serbia means the final end of the collapse of the former Yugoslavia. Others anticipate and worry that the recognition of Kosovo opens a Pandora's box that will lead to a chain reaction all over the world, spreading chaos, violence, and instability.

Balkans Tie Russia and Georgia Tights

The Price of the Question

Plagiarizing Pushkin I’d say: “A shadow of Lavrov fell over the hills of Georgia”. The shadow fell on the occasion of the inauguration of President Saakashvili. Mind your, it was Lavrov’s shadow, not that of Medvedev, for example. The Russian foreign minister came to Georgia to have a look at the second edition of the Georgian chieftain.

Window on Eurasia: New Satellite TV to Link World’s Circassians Together

Paul Goble

Baku, January 18 – Expelled from their Caucasian homeland by the tsars, scattered throughout the Middle East by the Ottomans, and subdivided by the Soviets, the five million Circassians of the world will soon be linked together via satellite TV, a joint project of Circassian activists in Jordan and Circassian regimes in the North Caucasus.
National Adiga Radio Television – Adiga is the self-designator of the Circassians – is based in Jordan but enjoys the active support of the large Circassian community in Turkey and the leaders of the Circassian republics of the North Caucasus (Adygeia, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachay-Cherkessia).

And while NART began broadcasting on radio and over the Internet last summer (http://nart.narttv.com/), its organizers are now almost ready to begin sending out television programs via satellite first to the entire Middle East and the Northern Caucasus and then to the more than 40 other countries in which Circassians now live.

Abkhazia sees no future in talks with Georgia's Saakashvili

Abkhazia's President Sergei Bagapsh (shown) sees little hope of a breakthrough in independence talks with Georgia's Saakashvili

With Saakashvili in power in Georgia, a Georgian-Abkhazian dialogue has no future. That is the opinion of Abkhazia's President Sergei Bagapsh. The opposition says elections in Georgia were rigged, but for Bagapsh they were merely "elections in a neighboring state".
By Jason Cooper, 15/Jan/2008

SUKHUMI (Tiraspol Times) - Abkhazia's President Sergei Bagapsh believes that any talks with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili have little chance of achieving a breakthrough, Interfax reported Monday.

Turkish-southern Caucasus regional relations in 2008

Hasan Kanbolat

The presidential elections slated to take place in 2008 in the southern Caucasus will be one of the most important topics on the agenda for the coming year in the region. To wit, in Georgia, the Jan. 5 presidential elections have already taken place. The guiding forces in the election results in the southern Caucasus region is not the actual votes of the citizens, but the expressed convictions of the political administrations in power. In this sense, the upcoming presidential elections in both Azerbaijan and Armenia are not expected to bring about much in the way of significant changes to the current political administrations. Within this framework, it is also not anticipated that there will be any concrete developments as far as Nagorno-Karabakh is concerned.

Russia: Court Charges Beslan Victims' Group With 'Extremism'

The winter holidays are a difficult time for the many families that lost relatives in the hostage drama that struck the small North Ossetian town of Beslan in September 2004.

For the Voice of Beslan, a victims' group led by women who lost children in the siege, this year's holidays brought further distress: a court summons from neighboring Ingushetia, where local prosecutors had filed charges accusing the organization of "extremist" activities.
